Website of the Week... Report on Immigrants- By Charlotte Kudadirgwa
CharlotteKudadirgwa_ImmigrationFeature.mp3

This is not a website, but an MP3 documentary. But since the time involved in perusing it is similar to browsing a website, I'm including it this week to give it the audience it deserves.
Charlotte Kudadirgwa presents a special documentary report on some of the settlement issues faced by immigrants in Canada . Using direct interviews and comments, we follow the lives of two of Belleville 's immigrants and how they dealt with their initial sense of social isolation in a report titled,
"Welcome to Canada ...Now What?"
Charlotte is a student at Loyalist College in Belleville , ON .

Click the link above to access the MP3 file.

Fulford Academy - School of English is a unique, private, coeducational English Second Language Boarding School for international students aged 11 to 17.

Fulford Academy offers a warm, nurturing environment where International ESL (English as a Second Language) students aged 11 to 17 can prepare linguistically , academically and culturally for a smooth transition into prestigious Canadian and American boarding schools. In order to successfully place students, Fulford focuses on teaching English language skills and Canadian culture through the use of curriculum content from math, science, history, geography and English literature, thereby developing skills in vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, pronunciation, writing and listening skills.

The Summer Academic Orientation Program (July and August) is an extension of our ESL Prep Program which is the final step for students attending a boarding school in September. This very demanding English immersion program continues to teach ESL through Canadian content curriculum, including literacy development, study skills and time management but at a much faster pace.

Our High School Program is for students who have completed ESL Prep, and need ESL support to complete high school credits. We partner with a private Ministry of Education in Ontario high school to deliver Grade 9 to 12 courses. This Program is ideal for students with an intermediate to advanced level of English, but who need a further year to qualify for admission to a competitive boarding school.

For more information on our programs please go to our website.

Quinte United Immigrant Services (Q.U.I.S.)
41 Octavia Street
P.O. Box 22141
Belleville, ON K8N 5V7
Phone: 613-968-7723
Fax 613-968-2597
Website: www.quis-immigration.org
Email:info@quis-immigration.org

Quinte United Immigrant Services currently offers direct, essential and free services to newcomers to Canada including reception, orientation, translation/interpretation, referral to community resources, solution focused counselling, general information, and employment-related services to meet the needs of newly arrived immigrants any time after their arrival in Canada.

The Host Program is also offered and designed to match resident Canadians with new immigrants to help them learn how to live in Canada. You are matched one-on-one with a Canadian volunteer who will meet with you at least twice per month for English conversation, friendship and help to get to know the Quinte community. The Host Program helps you learn about Canadian traditions and customs. With the assistance and understanding of volunteers, the Host Program makes a new country feel like home for newcomers.

Your Host can help you to feel less isolated and lonely, and can help with the stress of adjusting to a new country by introducing you to a new friend or many new friends through group activities like English Conversation Circles for adults, a Homework Club for kids and special events for the whole family.

Many newcomers want to improve their English, and to practise in real situations. Our English Conversation Circles provide a way for you to both practise English or French conversation and socialize with Canadians. Each group is facilitated by at least one volunteer, with a ratio of about one volunteer to five or fewer newcomers. The groups engage in lively conversation about their lives and other topics that interest them. Friendships are encouraged between newcomers as well as between volunteers and newcomers.

Community events, field trips and sports events are all structured activities that involve more than just conversation. These groups offer a mixture of activities, recreation and socializing. Examples include field trips to libraries, parks, soccer events and summer camps that bring children or whole families together.

In partnership with local schools, free homework help is offered to the children of newcomers to Canada. Secondary school student tutors meet with newcomer children from grades 1-8 and give them some extra help with their homework. Subjects range from English to Math and Science, but the focus is on helping newcomers learn about Canadian life.

Further, Quinte United Immigrant Services offers a Newcomer Employment Resource Centre which provides pre-employment support on effective job search skills to immigrants and refugees who are unemployed, out of school and legally allowed to work in Canada with the goal of helping them enter the workforce.

W e also offer a translation service as well as Central Eastern Ontario Translation and Interpretation Services which provides Face-to-Face Interpretation, Telephone Interpreting, Message Relay, and Document Translation. The services offered by Central Eastern Ontario Translation and Interpretation Services are available free of charge for victims of Domestic Violence.

We are currently looking for volunteers, as well as interpreters for many languages.

This site features "American English", but it works for Canadian students too. Using videos and charts as well as diagrams of the mouth, it makes it easy to learn how to make the phonetic sounds of English. If you like visuals as well as sound, this site is for you! It also includes idioms and many other resources. Best for Internediate and Advanced, but Beginners can learn the alphabet sounds by watching the video and listening to the sounds.
