Fulford Academy - School of English is a unique, private, coeducational English Second Language Boarding School for international students aged 11 to 16.

Fulford Academy's ESL Prep Program meets the needs of international students who are competitive academically for prestigious boarding schools, but who lack the linguistic ability to meet admission requirements. Designed specifically for students aged 11 to 16, Fulford is a bridge to successful integration into boarding schools. Fulford focuses on teaching English language skills and Canadian culture through math/science, history/geography and English literature, thereby developing skills in vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, pronunciation, writing and listening skills. The Summer Academic Orientation Program (July and August) is an extension of our ESL Prep Program which is the final step for students attending a boarding school in September. This very demanding English immersion program continues to teach ESL through Canadian content curriculum, including literacy development, study skills and time management but at a much faster pace.

Our High School Program is for students who have completed ESL Prep, and need ESL support to complete high school credits. We partner with a private Ministry of Education in Ontario high school to deliver Grade 9 to 12 courses. This Program is ideal for students with an intermediate to advanced level of English, but who need a further year to qualify for admission to a competitive boarding school.

Call us to find out more about this program.

ISKA is also proud to have a Host program which is a “friendship-based” volunteer program that matches community members with Immigrants seeking social interaction and friendship. We also provide a Language Bank (an informal process of interpreting for ISKA staff to better understand clients’ needs when English is not their predominant language).

Every month ISKA offers two Information and Orientation sessions. These sessions are designed to give immigrants practical help in coping with common issues related to the immigration experience, while introducing clients to the community. Information and Orientation sessions can help new immigrants understand life in Canada and make Canada feel more like home.

Watch for upcoming information sessions where we will explore Education in Canada , Health and Dental Care, Housing and other topics that newcomers have identified as important. We will also be offering a Job Search series which will help newcomers looking for employment with such things as: resume and cover letter writing, employment search techniques, interview skills and other relevant employment related topics.

Refer to our monthly calendars and posters for more details on these sessions and other exciting things happening at ISKA. Calendars and newsletters may be dfownloaded from our website. On the home page, you can click on the link under "News and Events".

Email:info@quis-immigration.org

Quinte United Immigrant Services currently offers direct, essential and free services to newcomers to Canada including reception, orientation, translation/interpretation, referral to community resources, solution focused counselling, general information, and employment-related services to meet the needs of newly arrived immigrants any time after their arrival in Canada.

The Host Program is also offered and designed to match resident Canadians with new immigrants to help them learn how to live in Canada. You are matched one-on-one with a Canadian volunteer who will meet with you at least twice per month for English conversation, friendship and help to get to know the Quinte community. The Host Program helps you learn about Canadian traditions and customs. With the assistance and understanding of volunteers, the Host Program makes a new country feel like home for newcomers.

Your Host can help you to feel less isolated and lonely, and can help with the stress of adjusting to a new country by introducing you to a new friend or many new friends through group activities like English Conversation Circles for adults, a Homework Club for kids and special events for the whole family.

Many newcomers want to improve their English, and to practise in real situations. Our English Conversation Circles provide a way for you to both practise English or French conversation and socialize with Canadians. Each group is facilitated by at least one volunteer, with a ratio of about one volunteer to five or fewer newcomers. The groups engage in lively conversation about their lives and other topics that interest them. Friendships are encouraged between newcomers as well as between volunteers and newcomers.

Community events, field trips and sports events are all structured activities that involve more than just conversation. These groups offer a mixture of activities, recreation and socializing. Examples include field trips to libraries, parks, soccer events and summer camps that bring children or whole families together.

In partnership with local schools, free homework help is offered to the children of newcomers to Canada. Secondary school student tutors meet with newcomer children from grades 1-8 and give them some extra help with their homework. Subjects range from English to Math and Science, but the focus is on helping newcomers learn about Canadian life.

Further, Quinte United Immigrant Services offers a Newcomer Employment Resource Centre which provides pre-employment support on effective job search skills to immigrants and refugees who are unemployed, out of school and legally allowed to work in Canada with the goal of helping them enter the workforce.
